Cardiac Rehabilitation

What is Cardiac Rehabilitation?

Cardiac Rehabilitation is a medically supervised program designed to improve and optimize the physical, mental, and social functioning of people with cardiovascular disease. These programs slow down the progression of cardiovascular disease and, in some cases, reverse the buildup of blockages already present in arteries.

Cardiac Rehabilitation is highly recommended for one or more of the following conditions: any type of myocardial infarction (heart attack) or acute coronary syndrome over the past year, angina (chest pain or pressure), heart failure, and recent coronary artery stent placement, coronary artery bypass graft surgery, cardiac valve surgery, or heart transplant.

The rehabilitation can be segregated into 3 distinct parts.

  • Exercise and training help the entire cardiovascular system to work. Depending on the condition, the therapist will supervise and advise exercises.
  • Education for heart-healthy living is a key element of cardiac rehab. Ways to manage risk factors and make lifestyle changes can lead to healthy heart.
  • Counseling helps reduce stress that can be harmful for the heart. The therapist will help you identify and tackle everyday sources of stress.
