What Is a Muscle Strain?
A muscle strain occurs when muscle fibres are overstretched or torn, ranging from minor micro-tears to complete ruptures. Early physiotherapy is critical to prevent chronic instability and ensure a full, lasting recovery.
Grade I — Mild
Overstretching without significant tearing. Mild pain, minimal strength loss. Typical recovery 1–3 weeks with physiotherapy.
Grade II — Moderate
Partial tearing with moderate pain, swelling, and functional limitation. Recovery typically 3–8 weeks with structured rehabilitation.
Grade III — Severe
Complete tear with significant loss of function. May require extended physiotherapy or surgical consultation before rehab begins.
Common Causes of Muscle Strain
Muscle strains are most often caused by sudden forceful movements, inadequate warm-up, repetitive overuse, direct impact, or muscular fatigue. Poor posture and biomechanical imbalances are frequent contributors in both athletes and desk workers.
- Hamstring
- Quadriceps
- Calf Muscle
- Groin / Adductors
- Shoulder Rotator Cuff
- Lower Back
- Neck Muscles
- Hip Flexors
Why Early Physiotherapy Matters
Left untreated, muscle strains can develop scar tissue, chronic weakness, and recurring injury patterns. Early physiotherapy intervention accelerates healing, reduces pain, restores full range of motion, and significantly lowers your re-injury risk.
Did you know? Athletes who receive early physiotherapy return to sport up to 40% faster than those who rest alone — with significantly lower re-injury rates over the following 12 months.
Symptoms of a Muscle Strain
Symptoms vary based on the grade and location. If you are experiencing any of the following, early assessment is essential to prevent chronic complications.
Sudden Sharp Pain
A sudden onset of pain during activity, often described as a sharp "pop" or tearing sensation at the injury site.
Swelling & Inflammation
Localized swelling and warmth developing within hours of the injury as the body responds to damaged tissue.
Bruising (Ecchymosis)
Discoloration from internal bleeding, often appearing 24–48 hours after the initial strain occurs.
Muscle Weakness
Reduced strength and inability to generate force through the injured muscle, especially against resistance or load.
Limited Range of Motion
Difficulty moving the affected joint through its full range due to pain, tightness, or protective muscle guarding.
Muscle Spasms
Involuntary contractions of surrounding muscles as a protective mechanism to limit further damage to the area.
