About Neck Pain

What Is Neck Pain & Why Does It Happen?

Neck pain โ€” clinically known as cervicalgia โ€” affects the muscles, ligaments, joints, discs and nerves of the cervical spine (C1โ€“C7). It ranges from acute muscular tension to chronic radiculopathy with arm symptoms. Whether from a desk job, a car accident or degenerative change, neck pain responds well to physiotherapy.

RCP Health's physiotherapists perform a thorough cervical assessment โ€” including movement analysis, neurological screening and postural evaluation โ€” before creating your personalised treatment plan.

Canadian data: Approximately 1 in 6 Canadians reports neck or back pain severe enough to limit daily activities, making it one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints seen by primary care providers across Canada. (Statistics Canada, Canadian Community Health Survey)

Common Causes of Neck Pain

  • Poor posture & tech neck โ€” prolonged screen use strains cervical muscles and discs
  • Muscle strain & tension โ€” overuse, stress or sleeping position
  • Whiplash โ€” rapid flexion-extension injury, most often from motor vehicle accidents (MVA)
  • Cervical disc herniation โ€” bulging or ruptured discs compress nerve roots
  • Cervical spondylosis โ€” age-related degeneration of discs and facet joints
  • Cervicogenic headache โ€” headache originating from the neck
  • Nerve impingement / radiculopathy โ€” shooting pain, numbness or weakness into the arm
  • Torticollis (wry neck) โ€” sudden onset muscle spasm locking the neck to one side
Signs & Symptoms

When Should You Seek Physiotherapy for Neck Pain?

If any of the following apply, an assessment with an RCP Health physiotherapist can identify the cause and begin treatment.

Stiffness that limits turning or tilting your head

Pain radiating into the shoulder, arm or hand

Numbness, tingling or weakness in fingers

Headaches starting at the base of the skull

Aching or soreness after desk work or screen time

Clicking, grinding or crunching sounds on movement

Neck pain following a car accident or fall

Pain that wakes you at night or is worse in the morning

Prevention tip: According to the Canadian Physiotherapy Association, early physiotherapy intervention after the onset of neck pain significantly reduces the risk of developing chronic pain and reduces overall healthcare utilisation. Don't wait โ€” book early.

Our Approach

How RCP Health Treats Neck Pain

Our registered physiotherapists use a combination of hands-on manual therapy and active rehabilitation, tailored to your diagnosis and goals.

Manual Therapy

Hands-on joint mobilisation and soft-tissue techniques to restore cervical range of motion, reduce pain and decompress nerve roots.

Joint Mobilisation & Manipulation

Targeted grade Iโ€“IV mobilisation of cervical facet joints to improve glide mechanics and reduce stiffness and protective muscle spasm.

Dry Needling

Intramuscular stimulation of cervical and periscapular trigger points to release muscle tightness and interrupt the pain-spasm cycle.

Therapeutic Ultrasound

Deep tissue heating to promote tissue healing, reduce inflammation and ease chronic muscular tightness in the cervical region.

Graston Technique / IASTM

Instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilisation to break down fascial restrictions and scar tissue in the cervical musculature.

Therapeutic Exercise & Postural Re-training

Individualised deep neck flexor strengthening, scapular stability and postural correction programs โ€” the foundation of lasting recovery.

Kinesio Taping

Neuromuscular taping to support soft tissues, improve proprioception and reduce pain between sessions.

At-Home Physiotherapy

Can't make it in? RCP Health offers in-home physiotherapy visits across Oakville, Burlington and Mississauga for patients who need treatment at home.

Assessment Tools We Use

Cervical ROM Assessment

Goniometric measurement of flexion, extension, rotation and lateral flexion to baseline your mobility deficits.

Neurological Screening

Dermatomal sensation, myotomal strength and reflex testing to detect cervical radiculopathy (C5โ€“C8).

Spurling's & Upper Limb Tension Tests

Orthopaedic special tests to identify nerve root compression and brachial plexus involvement.

Postural Analysis

Static and dynamic postural assessment to identify forward head posture, text neck and thoracic kyphosis contributors.

NDI (Neck Disability Index)

Validated self-report outcome measure to track functional limitations and guide treatment progression.

Vertebral Artery Screening

Pre-manipulation safety screening to rule out vertebrobasilar insufficiency before cervical mobilisation.

Prevention

Preventing Neck Pain Recurrence

  • Set up an ergonomic workstation โ€” monitor at eye level, keyboard at elbow height
  • Take regular movement breaks every 30โ€“45 minutes during seated work
  • Strengthen deep neck flexors and scapular stabilisers with your RCP home program
  • Use a supportive pillow with correct cervical alignment
  • Manage stress โ€” tension headaches and muscle guarding are stress-driven
  • Stay physically active โ€” general exercise is strongly protective against chronic neck pain
Home Physiotherapy

Neck Exercises You Can Do at Home

  • Chin tucks โ€” gently retract chin, hold 5 sec ร— 10 reps to correct forward head posture
  • Cervical rotations โ€” slow, controlled head turns to each side to restore rotation ROM
  • Upper trapezius stretch โ€” side-bend neck, apply gentle overpressure for 30 seconds each side
  • Scapular squeezes โ€” retract shoulder blades to offload cervical muscles
  • Doorway chest stretch โ€” opens pectorals to correct rounded shoulder posture

Always perform exercises as prescribed by your RCP physiotherapist. Stop if symptoms worsen.
