Kinesio
Taping
Therapy
Elastic therapeutic taping that supports muscles, reduces pain, and enhances movement — without limiting your range of motion. Clinically applied by registered physiotherapists at RCP Health for back pain, knee injuries, shoulder conditions, carpal tunnel, tennis elbow, and more.
What Is Kinesio Taping?
Kinesio taping — developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase in the 1970s — uses a thin, elastic therapeutic tape that mimics the weight and elasticity of human skin. Unlike rigid athletic tape, kinesio tape lifts the skin microscopically, creating space in the subcutaneous tissue beneath it.
At RCP Health, our physiotherapists apply kinesio tape as part of a comprehensive clinical program — combining targeted taping with manual therapy, exercise rehabilitation, and neuromuscular re-education to produce lasting results across a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions.
A 2021 systematic review in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy found statistically significant improvements in pain intensity (VAS) and disability scores across chronic musculoskeletal conditions when kinesio taping was combined with physiotherapy rehabilitation.
The tape's recoil creates microscopic space under skin, reducing pressure on pain receptors and interstitial fluid, instantly decreasing pain signalling.
Decompression enhances blood and lymphatic flow through previously compressed tissue, accelerating healing and reducing swelling.
Constant afferent skin input modulates pain perception via gate control theory, and improves proprioception and joint position sense.
Applied with specific tension, the tape facilitates weak or inhibited muscles and inhibits overactive/spasming muscle groups without restricting movement.
Kinesio Taping Techniques We Use
Different taping patterns, tensions, and directions serve distinct clinical purposes. Our physiotherapists select the appropriate technique based on your diagnosis and treatment goals.
Muscle Technique
Applied along the length of a muscle — from origin to insertion to facilitate a weak muscle, or insertion to origin to inhibit an overactive one. Used for rotator cuff, quadriceps, hamstrings, and paraspinals.
Lymphatic / Oedema Technique
Fan-cut tape applied with minimal tension, directing fluid toward functioning lymph nodes. Dramatically reduces post-surgical swelling, oedema from sprains, and lymphoedema in cancer rehabilitation patients.
Ligament / Tendon Technique
High-tension application (75–100%) over a ligament or tendon provides structural support during healing while allowing full range of motion. Used for lateral ankle sprains, patellar tendinopathy, and carpal tunnel.
Corrective / Fascial Technique
Applied across fascial planes to improve tissue glide, correct joint mechanics, and address postural dysfunction. Common in shoulder impingement, IT band syndrome, and chronic neck pain with forward head posture.
Neuromuscular / Space Technique
Creates space over an acutely inflamed or painful joint, reducing pressure on subcutaneous pain receptors. Used in tennis elbow, patellofemoral syndrome, and acute musculoskeletal injuries for immediate pain relief.
Functional Movement Taping
Applied while the patient performs an active movement pattern, the tape provides dynamic sensory feedback during activity. Especially effective for sports return, gait retraining, and shoulder biomechanics correction.

Tendon & Elbow Pain
- Outer elbow pain worsened by gripping (tennis elbow)
- Inner elbow pain with wrist flexion (golfer's elbow)
- Heel pain in the morning (plantar fasciitis)
- Shoulder pain reaching overhead or behind your back
Pregnancy & Post-Surgical
- Low back or pelvic girdle pain during pregnancy
- Swelling or oedema after a surgical procedure
- Slow functional recovery following joint replacement
- Scar sensitivity or restricted movement post-operation
How We Apply Kinesio Taping
At RCP Health, kinesio taping is never a stand-alone treatment. Every application is preceded by clinical assessment, guided by biomechanical analysis, and followed by active rehabilitation — ensuring your tape does exactly what your tissue needs.
Comprehensive Movement Assessment
Range of motion, joint mechanics, muscle activation patterns, and postural alignment are assessed to determine optimal tape direction, tension, and anchor placement.
Skin & Tissue Preparation
The application area is cleaned and dried. Skin integrity, hair density, and any prior tape reactions are noted. Correct skin position (stretched or relaxed) is determined by taping goal.
Precise Tape Application
Tape is cut to the correct shape (I, Y, X, fan, donut) and applied at calibrated tension — 0% for neurosensory, 15–25% for muscle facilitation, 75–100% for ligament support — depending on clinical need.
Active Movement Verification
You move through the full range of the taped joint immediately after application. Your physiotherapist confirms the tape is producing the intended effect — not restricting movement or causing skin irritation.
Integrated Rehabilitation Program
Taping is combined with targeted exercise, manual therapy, and load management to address the root cause — not just symptom relief. Home care instructions and tape aftercare are provided.
Reassessment & Tape Renewal
At each session your physiotherapist reassesses function and adjusts tape application as tissue response evolves. Most patients transition to independent self-tape for ongoing maintenance.
Clinical Kinesio Taping vs. Over-the-Counter
Registered Physiotherapist Applied
Our RCP physiotherapists are trained in Kinesio Taping® certification methodology — not generic elastic tape techniques. Tension, direction, and anchor placement are calibrated to your specific diagnosis.
Assessment-Driven Application
Every taping application follows a functional movement screen and palpation assessment. Tape goes where your tissue actually needs it — not from a generic YouTube tutorial.
Integrated With Your Rehab Plan
Taping reinforces gains made in your session — supporting tissues during the exercise and activity between appointments. It is one component of your complete recovery plan.
Direct Billing — Most Insurers
Kinesio taping applied by a registered physiotherapist is covered under most extended health plans. We direct-bill Manulife, Sun Life, Great-West Life, Green Shield, and most major Canadian insurers.
Medical-Grade Tape Only
RCP Health uses certified Kinesio® Tex Gold and Tex Classic tape — the same tape used in Olympic athletics and clinical trials. This is distinct from inexpensive imitation tape sold at retail stores.

Lymphology Journal, 2021Assessment Tools at RCP Health
Accurate clinical assessment determines optimal tape type, pattern, tension and placement — and tracks your response across sessions.
Functional Movement Screen (FMS)
7-pattern movement assessment identifying mobility and stability deficits that guide tape pattern selection and anchor placement for functional and sport-specific taping.
Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS)
0–10 pain score recorded before and after taping to objectively measure immediate analgesic response and track progress across treatment sessions.
Goniometry & Inclinometry
Precise angular measurement of joint range of motion before and after tape application — confirms that the tape is improving, not restricting, movement.
Palpation & Tissue Assessment
Hands-on assessment of muscle tone, trigger point locations, joint tenderness, and tissue texture informs tape direction and the choice between facilitation vs. inhibition technique.
Patient-Specific Functional Scale (PSFS)
Patient rates difficulty with 3–5 personally meaningful tasks (e.g. typing, climbing stairs, throwing) — aligning taping goals with real-world function and return-to-activity milestones.
Limb Volume / Circumference Measurement
Pre- and post-taping circumference measurements with a tape measure quantify oedema reduction from lymphatic taping — particularly for post-surgical and cancer rehabilitation patients.
