About Back Pain Physiotherapy
Back pain is the leading cause of disability in Canada — affecting 4 in 5 adults at some point in their lives. At RCP Health, our registered physiotherapists use advanced diagnostic assessment to identify the root cause of your pain and build a targeted recovery plan.
Whether you're dealing with acute lower back pain, chronic back pain lasting months, shooting leg pain from sciatica, or postural strain from desk work — our musculoskeletal physiotherapy team delivers real, lasting results without medication or surgery.
What We Treat
Our team treats the full spectrum of spinal and musculoskeletal conditions — from acute injuries to complex chronic back conditions.

Learn more ›Radiating pain, numbness, or tingling from the lower back through the buttock and down the leg — from disc herniation or piriformis syndrome.
Learn more ›Disc material pressing on spinal nerves causing local or radiating pain. Responds well to physiotherapy, traction, and McKenzie technique.
Learn more ›Narrowing of the spinal canal causing pain, heaviness, or cramping in the legs with walking. Managed with exercise therapy and postural retraining.
Learn more ›Abnormal lateral spinal curvature. Physiotherapy helps manage pain and improve posture with Schroth-based exercise programs.
Learn more ›Pain at the junction of the spine and pelvis, often mistaken for hip or lower back pain. Manual therapy and stabilization exercises are highly effective.
Learn more ›Degenerative arthritis of the small spinal joints causing stiffness and localized back pain — especially with extension and rotation.
Learn more ›Acute back muscle tears or chronic spasm from overuse, poor lifting mechanics, or sudden movements. Rapid response with manual therapy and IMS.
Learn more ›Upper and lower back pain from prolonged sitting, desk work, or device use. Ergonomic retraining and postural correction programs.
Learn more ›Lumbar and pelvic girdle pain during pregnancy or postpartum. Safe, specialized techniques to manage pain and support recovery.
Learn more ›Stress fractures, disc injuries, and muscle strains in athletes. Sport-specific rehabilitation to get you back to competition safely.
Learn more ›Recovery following spinal fusion, discectomy, or laminectomy. Structured rehabilitation to restore mobility, strength, and function.

How We Treat Back Pain
Every treatment plan is individually designed following a thorough assessment of your movement, strength, and pain patterns.
Hands-on joint mobilization and manipulation to restore spinal movement, reduce stiffness, and relieve pressure on compressed nerves.
A directional exercise system clinically proven to centralize and eliminate back and leg pain from disc-related conditions and sciatica.
Progressive strengthening of deep stabilizing muscles — multifidus, transversus abdominis — to protect the lumbar spine long-term.
Intramuscular stimulation targeting myofascial trigger points contributing to chronic back muscle pain and spasm.
Mechanical traction to gently decompress lumbar discs, reduce nerve pressure, and relieve disc-related leg pain and sciatica.
Electrophysical agents to reduce inflammation, control pain, and accelerate tissue healing in acute and chronic back conditions.
Your Recovery Journey
60-minute initial session covering full health history, movement analysis, neurological screening, and pain mapping to identify the exact source of your back pain.
A clear, structured plan with specific goals, treatment milestones, and an estimated recovery timeline — so you always know what to expect.
Hands-on physiotherapy sessions combined with a home exercise program. We educate you on posture, ergonomics, and movement to prevent recurrence.
As pain resolves, we progressively build spinal strength and mobility needed to support your work, sport, and daily activities long-term.
A self-management plan, maintenance exercises, and return-to-activity guidelines to keep you pain-free and reduce future episodes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about back pain treatment, what to expect, and how physiotherapy can help.
Most patients with acute back pain see significant improvement in 6–10 sessions over 4–6 weeks. Chronic conditions or post-surgical cases may require 12–20 sessions. Your physiotherapist will give a realistic timeline at your initial assessment.
Yes — the majority of herniated disc cases respond very well to physiotherapy without surgery. Research shows 80–90% of disc herniations improve with conservative treatment including manual therapy, McKenzie exercises, and spinal traction.
OHIP does not cover private physiotherapy. However, most group extended health insurance plans cover physiotherapy. RCP Health offers direct billing to most major insurers including Sun Life, Manulife, Desjardins, and Green Shield.
The most effective treatments for sciatica include the McKenzie Method, neural mobilization (nerve flossing), lumbar traction, and targeted core strengthening. The right approach depends on what's causing the nerve compression — which is why a proper assessment is essential first.
Current evidence strongly recommends staying as active as possible — complete bed rest is no longer recommended and often makes things worse. Your physiotherapist at RCP Health will guide you on safe activities and therapeutic exercises that support recovery without aggravating your condition.
